Nanotechnology is the study and manipulation of matter at the molecular level in its simplest terms. There has been an explosion in research and development in all areas of science with nanotechnology. Nanomedicine is the application of these technologies to medicine, aiming to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities for care providers. There has been very little research relating to pediatrics and nanomedicine, however this will be an exciting new field for pediatric healthcare and research.
I will give a brief overview of nanotechnology and nanomedicine from a clinician’s perspective, defining the field and some of the milestones leading to the rapid increase in this type of research. A brief discussion of the nanomedicine program in Atlanta will be presented with a few examples of current projects in pediatric nanomedicine. Finally, I will review the current landscape for products that have a nanomedicine base that have current FDA approval- currently quite limited.
