Diabetes is a unique chronic disease in which the decisions most affecting the health and well-being of patients are made by the patients themselves. This is the critical reason that technologies that target patient/consumer empowerment and behavior change are making a large impact on diabetes-related health outcomes and healthcare costs. Mobile apps are particularly powerful because of the abundant usage of smart phones. Peer-review randomized clinical trials and pilot studies will be discussed to support strategy for physician usage of apps in the clinic. All cases discussed will be diabetes-specific but can be applied to many chronic diseases where lifestyle and/or medication adherence are primary factors in health outcomes.
